Seniors Competition - Report

Report submitted by: Nigel Rowe

In the semis, Shrivenham's Chris Wilson beat his Army colleague Ray Burke by 3-0 while Frome/Christie Miller player Paul Clark also had a straightforward 3-0 win against defending champion Julian Beckett. The final was a close-fought affair, as expected, with Wilson the marginal favourite having beaten Clark 3-1 the previous week in a League match. Clark went 2-1 up and had 3 match balls in the fourth but Wilson hung on and eventually romped home to take the 5th by 9-5. The Plate was won by Nigel Rowe with a 3-0 win over Steve Wakefield.

Over-35s - Report

Submitted by Mike Hyland

A good field for this year's Over-35's and overall a little stronger than last year with the addition of the Seniors Champion Chris Wilson and youngster Nigel Rowe. This year we managed to get the Championships over to the courts at Marlborough. Last minute withdrawals from Jason Smith and Busby Williams changed the fixture list a little at the last minute but all the usual players were there and some newbees.

The event had 7 seeds (B Williams was seeded but withdrew) who all made it through to the Quater finals with the top four going through to the Semis. All the games to that point were scored as 3-0 with the exception of Derek Bray vs Clive Morgan where we were all given a treat (some might say bored rigid) - both players came off knackered, and I'm sure Derek would have beaten Chris Wilson in the afternoon if he hadn't used up so much from his tank against Clive in the morning.

The Saturday was punctuated by a break to watch the Man U vs Arsenal game then early games after lunch so that we could all watch the Rugby (much to the chagrin of our Welsh players).

To balance out the Plate we had to seed four players and they all made it to the Plate Semis as predicted.

After a good night's rest it was back to the courts for a 10:30 start on the Sunday to fight out the Semis - Plate first then main event. In the Plate, Hyland (P3) pulled up injured whilst playing Gough (P1) and Kenneth (P4) turned the tables on a tiring Clive Morgan (P2) to set-up the final. In the Main Event we saw a couple of first class matches with Chris Wilson (1) beating Nigel Rowe (4) 3-1 and Ray Burke (3) turning around yet another defeat at the hands of Paul Clark (2) to take the last three games and a place in the final.

Following a brief lunch, the Main Event got off to a prompt 2:00pm start with Chris Wilson in fine form and not really stretched in any of the previous rounds. Ray Burke, on the other hand had had a very tough 5-set Semi against Paul Clark and looked out of sorts in the first game. Chris easily took it by 9-2 with his usual mixture of hard-hitting and deceptive boasts and lobs. Ray was determined to make it difficult for his Army colleague, however, and reduced his error-rate to push Chris close in the second, eventually going down by 9-7. Ray was now getting stronger and the turning point came when Chris tweaked an old muscle injury from his skiing days which reduced his mobility in the third game. Chris had a match ball but Ray battled away with some tremendous retrieving and eventually sneaked it by 10-9. The next game was crucial and Chris had the better of the early exchanges to establish an early lead. Ray again took the initiative, however, with some good retrieving and forehand drops to take it 9/5 and level the match. In the final game Chris was never really allowed to get going at all and a rampant Ray quickly took the game 9/0 and lifted the cup for the first time.

The plate final was a well fought affair with the solid Gough taking on Marlborough stable-mate Murray Kenneth. The final result was 3-0 to Graham and the first game was make-or-break for Murray who just lost out 10/8.

Ray Burke (Army) - 2002/3 Over-35's Winner Chris Wilson (Shrivenham) - 2002/3 Over-35's Runner-Up Graham Gough (RMCS) and Murray Kenneth (Marlborough) - 2002/3 Over-35's Plate finalists
