Winter Handicap Final

Handicap Cup Finalists - Trowbridge (Winners) and Wessex

The final of the 2009-10 Winter Handicap tournament took place on Thursday 2nd September 2010 at Marborough Squash club. Wessex (-5) took on Trowbridge (-7) in a nail biting match which swung to and fro and was only decided after the last match on court.

First on court at 5 and 4 respectively were Ian Peters-Phillips and Mark Cains for Wessex against Steve Connor and Rich Edwards for Trowbridge. Steve fought hard –once he’d stopped grumbling about his 2 point handicap – but did not really stretch Ian until the third game. However, Ian dug in and took the game 15/13 for a 3-love victory. On the other court, Mark took the first game easily. Rich recovered and took the next two but was starting to look a bit tired (it was his first time on court for 3 months after injury). Mark rallied to take the 4th 15-7 and no-one on the gallery felt confident about the outcome. Rich dug deep and found something to take the fifth and make the Trowbridge team a lot happier.

Wessex 1 Trowbridge 1

At number 3 John Walker took on Rich Elsden. Despite Rich’s lithe young body moving round the court much more easily than John’s (not much truth in that part), John annihilated Rich 3- love.

Wessex 2 Trowbridge 1

Next on court were Neil Marshman and Mark McGuiness. This was a tremendous battle in a game that lasted about an hour. With each player getting the best out of their own completely contrasting styles they produced and enthralling 5 setter with the winner of each game alternating. Eventually Mark did the business and took the fifth 15-9.

Wessex 2 Trowbridge 2

All down to the first string match – Ed Crane v Tom Oatley. Ed and Tom have had several very close games over the past two seasons with honours about even. This proved to be another very close game. In the first 2 games each player seemed to score in bursts of 5 points and resulted in a game apiece. The third game produced a lot of long, competitive tight rallies and the scores were never more than a couple of points apart. Tom edged that one. The fourth followed the pattern of the third and Tom prevailed taking the game 15-13.

Very Happy Trowbridge!

After the match both teams retired to the Wellington for much serious after match discussion and refreshment. Both teams left having enjoyed a great evening and were very grateful to the people at the Marlborough club for hosting and organising the final.
